1st Review! Doctor Who TRU Exclusive 9th Doctor & Imperial Guard Dalek

Hi there folks, and welcome to my first review on this blog! As I'm a massive Doctor Who fan, I thought it would be fitting that my first review be one of the recently released Doctor/Dalek 2 packs! So lets dive straight in and take a look at the 9th Doctor and the Imperial Dalek Guard, as featured in the Series 1 finale 'The Parting of the Ways!'

We'll start by looking at the 9th Doctor, as played by Christopher Eccleston.

The figure itself uses the now standard 9th Doctor sculpt, as opposed to the infamous "disco dancing" 9th Doctor sculpt, which naturally is much more preferred! As the box suggests, this figure is based on the 9th Doctor's appearance in his final story 'The Parting of the Ways,' and as such his costume reflects this. Although the majority of the costume is the same as previous 9th Doctor figures, the biggest difference is that he is wearing is black jumper, meaning we now finally have all 3 variants of his costumes in the form of the standard articulated figure (the black jumper was only previously seen on the "disco dancing" 9th Doctor figure). The black jumper does make him a very dull figure to look at, especially when compared to his other variants (of which I only own 1, as pictured), but nevertheless it him makes a very welcome addition to my collection!

As with many of the 5" Doctor Who figures, the likeness is absolutely spot on to Christopher Eccleston!

Unfortunately, unlike the previous releases of the 9th Doctor, this figure comes with no accessories. Not even a sonic screwdriver! This is my only real complaint with this figure, as the sonic was an important aspect of the 9th Doctor's character, what with him bringing it back and all! This complaint also goes for all of the released TRU exclusive Doctor/Dalek sets, as none of the Doctors come with any accessories!

Now lets move on to the second half of this set, the Imperial Guard Dalek!

I personally have been waiting for this dalek variant for a long time! Unusually it is probably the only New Series dalek that up until now had never been released in figure form, with the exception of a 12" remote control version. The figure uses the newer, more accurate dalek sculpt first used for the Series 4 Supreme Dalek and Crucible Dalek figures, and to make it even better features a brilliant new colour scheme! At first glance it appears to be the standard New Series dalek bronze, however comparisons with other daleks reveal that it is actually a darker shade, not unlike the SDCC exclusive Assault Dalek figure.

The obvious other difference is the black dome, which was obviously designed as a homage to the 2nd Doctor story 'The Evil of the Daleks,' in which the Emperor Dalek's guards featured standard bodies but black domes. This also makes it stand out from the other all-bronze New Series dalek figures, making it a very unique and welcome addition to Doctor Who collections everywhere!

My only complaint about this figure is the sink plunger arm. Although it is accurate to the story, I would have preferred it if they had given this dalek the larger gunstick arm that is also seen on several of the Emperor Dalek's guards in this story. As I said though, the sink plunger arm is still accurate, so I don't mind too much!

So there you have it for the 9th Doctor & Imperial Guard Dalek 2 pack! Overall, I think it is definitely one of the best of the six currently released 2 packs, along with the rest of the second wave! Although both figures are simple repaints, they are repaints that i have wanted for a long time, as have many other Doctor Who figure collectors, and as such look excellent on any Doctor Who shelf! This set is available exclusively at Toys R Us for £19.99, as are the other Doctor/Dalek 2 packs, and is definitely worth that price! If you're a Doctor Who collector, then you'll no doubt love this set! If you're just starting your Doctor Who figure collection then this is a great set to get, as are the rest of these 2 packs!

I hoped you've enjoyed this review! Feel free to leave your thoughts on these figures, and stay tuned for more Doctor Who reviews in the near future!
